The adolescents and young adults who participated were divided into two groups: one received self-care guidance digitally through DentView, and the other received traditional guidance from a dentist specializing in orthodontics. Oral hygiene was measured using the OHI-S index (Oral Hygiene Index – Simplified) before the guidance and again at the end of the follow-up period. In both groups, oral hygiene improved significantly, and no difference was found between the results of the DentView group and those who received guidance from a professional. In other words, digital self-care guidance delivered through DentView reached the same level as traditional one-to-one guidance over a short follow-up. The study supports the use of DentView as part of orthodontic care. The digital solution offers an effective way to strengthen patients' self-care and free up professionals' time without compromising the quality of care. We began our studies in the autumn of 2023, and now we are in the final stages. We initiated our thesis process in the same autumn, in collaboration with DentView. Our research focuses on user experiences with the DentViewPro self-care reporting tool, as well as its potential applications and development needs in the work of a dental hygienist. The aim was to generate insights into user experiences with the DentViewPro self-care reporting tool and how the data produced by this feature can be utilized in dental hygienists' work. The thesis was conducted as a qualitative study. We interviewed dental hygienists working in the KEUSOTE and SOITE regions who had used the Pro feature in their work. Key Research Findings The results showed that dental hygienists found the DentView service system as a whole to be beneficial and useful. The DentViewPro feature serves as a valuable support tool, particularly in guiding self-care. The report data was perceived as clear and easy to use. The most surprising finding was that most dental hygienists had not yet fully integrated the feature into their daily routines. The approach to directing patients to the DentView virtual kiosk varied — some guided patients to use the kiosk before the appointment, while others did so afterward. This significantly impacts the effectiveness of DentViewPro, as the benefit is reduced if the guidance occurs only after the appointment. It would be recommended that patients be directed to the virtual kiosk before their appointment, allowing the dental hygienist to gain the optimal benefits of the DentViewPro feature. Other challenges related to integrating the DentView service system into practice included the dental hygienists' tight schedules, adapting the feature into existing workflows, and patient-related factors. The study also explored development needs for DentView and strategies for integrating the DentView service system more comprehensively into all patient care processes. Completing this thesis has been a long and comprehensive learning journey, teaching us a great deal about both our own competencies and the importance of collaboration. Not everything in the thesis process went according to plan, but the moments when we had to find solutions were the most educational ones. One of the key factors throughout the process has been strong cooperation — both between us as a working pair and with our partners. It has been rewarding to explore the unique DentView system, and we are convinced that DentView is an excellent tool for preventive oral healthcare. Based on the responses, DentView was perceived as serving all age groups, with special recognition for its potential in assisting non-native speakers. DentViewPro proved to be a functional aid at different stages of a dental hygienist's daily work. The availability of pre-collected self-care habit data at the beginning of the appointment was considered valuable. DentView was seen as supporting the self-care guidance provided during the appointment. The system was perceived to enhance patient education by making the guidance more comprehensive and visually engaging. However, the effectiveness of utilizing the DentViewPro self-care report was largely dependent on how the dental hygienist directed the patient to use the virtual kiosk. When responses were completed before the appointment, the use of DentViewPro was more versatile and beneficial. Most dental hygienists believed that the DentView service system could be systematically utilized for all patients, but routine adoption required adjustments in professional workflows. Initially, integrating DentViewPro into daily practice slowed down the work process, but over time, it was found to increase efficiency. Continuous training and guidance on the system within organizations were seen as key factors in facilitating workflow changes. Development suggestions included integrations with patient information systems and the potential for mobile usage. A full version of the study will be published soon. A significant finding was that nearly all (96%) of the respondents considered guidance on self-care during reception visits important. However, only 28% felt they had enough time for it. Therefore, there is a clearly demonstrated need for digital solutions like DentView. DentView's preventive care system was widely appreciated among the respondents. 88% considered it a good way to improve the accessibility of self-care guidance, and 87% would recommend the adoption of DentView in other dental clinics in the area. This unmistakably shows that utilizing DentView in preventive care is meaningful and effective in the development of oral healthcare. When a client receives an orthodontic device, they can easily view the self-care instructions on the virtual kiosk. Instructions for their specific orthodontic device can also be found in the app for viewing at home. One example is the use of animations to demonstrate cleaning between teeth for patients using retention wires! We've also added self-care instructions for prosthetic patients, covering fixed prosthetic structures and implants. The animations guide users on using floss under bridge wires and cleaning an implant bridge with an interdental brush. We made a significant addition to the children's pathways as well. We introduced some gamification and many questions about self-care habits. In the Data Portal, we've added a new section for children's responses. The portal offers really interesting data from users! Among other things, we learn how much money is spent on candy weekly and whether it's the parent or the child who brushes the child's teeth. It's also worth mentioning that in Oulu, a whopping 6,215 clients received virtual self-care guidance from DentView in six months! The City of Oulu utilizes the DentView service package in all its oral health units. The university has conducted research on client motivation for self-care through the virtual kiosk at the Kaakkuri and Oulunsalo dental clinics. Additionally, data were collected at the Tornio dental clinic. Information on motivation was gathered from clients through surveys conducted in conjunction with the use of the DentView virtual kiosk and again later. The first author, Päivi Havela, presented the abstract in France at the EADPH (European Association of Dental Public Health) congress. DentView sparked a lot of interest and discussion among the attendees! The research results showed that DentView was easy to use (mean 8.6; SD1.9, median 10.0), it provided useful information on oral health-related issues (mean 8.6; SD1.7, median 9.5), and DentView successfully motivated clients to brush (mean 8.34; SD2.4, median 10.0) and floss (mean 7.4; SD3.1, median 8.0) their teeth. The results were not dependent on the respondent's educational background (p=0.66) or smoking habits (p=0.89).
